Food and Water Intake during Travel

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

When traveling to a foreign country, one should never forget that certain conditions are bound to be different. The environment and culture may present a totally opposite perspective of life as we are accustomed to. Potable water for one is not available in many places thus the need to opt for commercially sealed bottled or carbonated beverages. Don’t forget the ice and the water used for brushing your teeth as they may come from the same source as the unsafe drinking water.

Well-cooked foods, preferably steaming are the safest bet. Food sold by street vendors, unpasteurized dairy products and raw and uncooked seafood are usually the riskiest. Fruits are better peeled on your own since they are eaten raw to avoid chances of contamination.
